While entering into Yoli the Frozen Yogurt Shop in Berlin, the concept of the shop as well as the materials used create a very clean and fresh setting such as that of the product   yogurt which is clean, pure, white, bold and in this case FROZEN!.  The store is in no way like any other usual frozen yogurt store or chain that we’ve seen thus far; no repetition of the typical images or colors used.  The large windows and the open space plan of the store allows for a relaxing atmosphere which is sufficiently lit with ample of natural lighting thus allowing the customer to feel relaxed while they enjoy their frozen yogurt.

The building of approximately 370 sqm is characterized by a large glass gallery that recalls the image and feel of Formula One box, immediately projecting visitors in the Ferrari world.

From a technical point of view the glass gallery is highly innovative with a curved face without mounting posts and bars that permit total visibility inward and outward. The curved glass panels are assembled using a frameless anchor system, i.e. without mounting supports but with ultra light and clips that guarantees the perception of material continuity between the plate glasses and provides lightness to the whole system.

Climate control of the glass gallery is effected by a system of air circulation that takes advantage of the motion of air convection, allowing for the passive cooling by natural induction. This natural system is supported by a forced air system that may be activated when climate conditions require it. In addition, the exterior glass envelope is treated with special UV protection films as well as a screen prints that reduces sun rays for energy savings as required by national standards for the sector.

Beyond the glass gallery there is the commercial space. As in all Ferrari Stores the merchandise areas are: the zone for Ferrari fans is designed with aluminium slats of high flexibility, in the luxury zone the display windows use soft materials, brushed leather and polished lacquer, in the children’s zone both systems are integrated : slats and display windows finished in yellow lacquer. A shaped false ceiling outlines the design of the ensemble and follows the path of visitors. The design of the areas is tightly connected to the design and graphic project specific to each Ferrari Store.

The graphic style is integral part of the project, in a personal vision of Iosa Ghini Associates of the architectural space, where the three dimensions meet to obtain an encompassing area able to capture all senses, to transmit an engaging idea through a physical and iconographic interpretation.

A ‘contemporary’ home built in the early eighties was thoroughly gutted.  The glass-block partitions were removed and beige ‘popcorn stucco’ was scraped from almost every surface imaginable.  Several major interior structural walls were reconfigured and random window alignments were given order.  The result:  a crisp, modern “treehouse” for a meticulous client.  A sophisticated collection of large-format photography informed the new planar geometries of the interior.   Minor exterior adjustments maximized light and views while respecting the overall budget.

The original home had experienced two prior renovations and was especially ripe for a design overhaul.  Located in Coconut Grove, Miami’s oldest neighborhood, the home was surrounded by an lush tropical garden.  The new design takes full advantage of the amazing garden views.  With the photography collection in mind, only preferred northern light fills the main living gallery.

The top floor contains a spacious master suite, guest bedroom and reading loft.  The main entrance to the home is on the second floor, which contains the living, dining and kitchen areas.  Below is the realm of teenagers with two additional bedrooms and a den.  An outside terrace was added adjacent to the living room.  This new structure also serves as an airy carport below.

The client’s brief was to create a unique and iconic home. This presented challenges as the site is situated in a fairly homogenous suburban location. As a result, the house has been designed as a series of blocks which modulate the scale and minimize the impact of the house to the surrounding areas. It consists of a series of different internal levels, which step up progressively from the street. The house is quite solid from the street and progressively opens up to be completely open to the rear. These changes in levels created an opportunity for the strongly stepped external massing as well as the complex interplay of the stairs in the central internal spaces.

The house has an ‘L-shaped’ configuration to maximize the solar aspect for the living spaces. There is also a central courtyard to the west which allows for light to penetrate the middle of the house and also serves to break up the massing of the facade.

A feature of the house is the large central staircase element. The original idea for this stair came from the James Bond movie ‘Never Say Never Again’. This stair adjoins the central courtyard so it is always bathed in light. The stair connects the various level changes in a single fluid sculptural element in dark polished concrete.

The dominant feature of the house is the curved sail-like rear white walls. These walls soften the massing and bring a lightness to the house. The walls break up the space and progressively dematerialize the house into a series of cantilevered vertical and horizontal planes to the rear. The kitchen and living areas of the house finally dissolve into a large outdoor room for entertaining. This space contains a glass swimming pool with a pool bar and an a minimalist outdoor seating enclosure. This structure has more the feel of a lounge area or bar with reclining daybeds and fabric clad structures. The use of mirrors and chandeliers enhances the luxurious lounge feel. The rear space also contains a terraced market garden which enhances the European character of the space. The living room and outdoor areas are connected by an indoor/outdoor fireplace. The spaces revolve around this element and further blur the line between inside and out.

The complex geometries of the curved structures were resolved in 3-D by computer. Like all of our projects, this house, was designed entirely using 3-D computer modelling software. This allows the architect to see the influences of the site and spatial relationships on the design. This technique is called parametric design and you can see in real time how the design changes as you adjust to changing environmental variables.
